We were just informed that PeaceTones made the cut as one of the final three projects being considered for the award this year. Jeff will be on a plane to the Hague to be there in case we are the ultimate winner.

The Innovating Justice Project of The Hague Institute for the Internationalization of Law has just informed us that PeaceTones has made it to the final round of six to be assessed by the judges in the 2012 Innovating Justice Awards competition. The top three will be invited to The Hague in November, where the winner for 2012 will be announced. For more information on the competition, click here. My interview with Dave Hilton on Conflict Engagement Specialists, the first in a series of interviews with conflict engagement professionals, was posted today. To see and hear the interview, click here.
Tonight at the Creighton Law School I presented “Mediation in the Mainstream,” a talk about the nature of mediation and the array of conflict engagement found coming out of the mainstream. I’ve posted my notes for the talk (minus the graphics from the Power Point) – to see the basic text of the talk, click here: MediationintheMainstream – Post Copy
The International Institute for Conflict Prevention and Resolution just notified us that ODR Theory and Practice has been nominated for entry into the competition for a 2012 CPR Award in the Book category. If CPR operates on the same schedule that it has used in the past, the awards will be announced in January, 2013. For a link to CPR Awards information, click here.
I recently joined a task force formed by the International Committee of the ABA Section of Dispute Resolution. The Task Force on Interdisciplinary Approaches to Complex Dispute Resolution was formed at the recent ABA Section meeting in Washington, DC, and is co-chaired by Larry Bridgesmith of Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee, and Ross Sydney, owner of Mediate Today, in Canberra, Australia. The mission statement for the task force is posted here: ABA – TARGETTED MISSION STATEMENT FOR THE TASK FORCE ON INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACHES TO COMPLEX DISPUTE RESOLUTION.
This is exciting news for me: PeaceTones just moved to the voting round in a contest for innovating justice. All we need now is enough votes to be selected as the winner! The winner gets a suite of really great resources from the Innovating Justice organization that helps them scale their work up. The voting starts on September 20, so when the date rolls around, please go to http://www.
Last night at Montserrat House in DC, JayArr (on the left with his hand raised) and Carolyn Malachi (on the right in mid-song) did a benefit performance for PeaceTones. Although I was a bit disappointed at the turnout, I was not at all disappointed in the spirit in the room and the commitment to the PeaceTones goals of using music to encourage social change and to empower those who live in post conflict (and active conflict) environments.
I have a very close emotional connection to PeaceTones, not least because it was born of a conversation between Jeff Aresty and me while we were lost on Paradise Lane in Liverpool some years ago. PeaceTones is intentionally run with a narrow margin for survival – 90% of any money raised goes to the artist and the social project of her or his choice. That means that events like the one last night are crucial for PeaceTones’ sustainability. If there’s one in your town, please support the artists by coming out for some good music and good company. You can find info on the project and the artists at PeaceTones.
Sorry about the grainy photos – an iPhone in low light will only yield so much . . . .
I just sent a copy of ODR Theory and Practice to the Gimnazium School of Pope John Paul II, in Leczycy, Poland. The students wanted a copy for their library – they think it will be a good test of their English. I’m not quite sure how to take that, but I was happy to supply a copy for them.
In September, at the ACR conference in New Orleans, I’ll be doing a stint at the “Author’s Corner” with copies and discount coupons from Eleven, the publisher. Drop by if you are at the conference and have a few minutes – I’ll be there from 12:30 – 1:00 pm on Friday, Sept. 14.
